FA Cup winner’s medal and menu go on sale

A RARE Bolton Wanderers FA Cup winner’s medal will be auctioned off this month — and fans in can bid online for the £2,000 lot.

The 15-carat gold medal, from the 1926 final, when Wanderers beat Manchester City 1-0, is one of only 15 handed out to players and staff.

With a guide price of £1,800 to £2,000, the winner’s medal can also be bought along with a signed dinner menu from the final, worth between £250 to £300.

The dinner was held after the final, on April 24, 1926, at the Hotel Russell in London.

The two items will go under the hammer on Thursday, September 23, at the Clive Pavilion, Ludlow Racecourse.

Auctioneer John Mullock said: “The medal has come from a client in the Manchester area.

“It isn’t attributed to a particular player. It is in fantastic condition and is still in its presentation box.

“There will not have been that many handed out in those days—maybe only 15.”

Whites striker David Jack, who scored the first goal in a Wembley FA Cup final in 1923, also scored the winner in the narrow victory over City.

He went on to become the first £10,000 player when he was signed by Arsenal in 1928.

The menu, signed by Wanderers players of the day and some of the club’s former stars, comes from a descendant of Bob “Sparrow”

Brown, who played for the Whites between 1895 and 1902.

It is also signed by threetime FA Cup winners Bob Haworth and Billy Butler, who scored in the 1929 final victory over Portsmouth.

Mr Mullock said: “The menu has been signed by a lot of the players and with the medal will make a very nice collectors’ piece.

“Wanderers are a very historic club and were the first winners of the FA Cup at Wembley.

“I’m sure there will be a lot of interest.”
