DOZENS of campaigners gathered at a popular mini zoo yesterday in protest at the attraction’s planned closure.
Bolton Council is planning to axe Animal World and Butterfly House at Moss Bank Park as part of its drive to make cuts across its whole budget.
But members of the trade union, Unison, which represents council workers, have presented a 4,000-signature petition to Cllr Sufrana Bashir-Ismail, the council’s executive member for cleaner, greener, safer.
Around 70 protesters turned out in the ice and snow outside Animal World at 11am. Bernie Gallagher, branch secretary of the Unison Bolton Metro branch, said: “Given the weather, it was a good turnout, including a number of parents and children.
“The consultation period is closed now but the final decision won’t be made until February so it is not too late for people to continue putting pressure on the council.”
Cllr Bashir-Ismail will make the final decision on the plans in her role as an executive member. She said: “We will of course take on board the strength of feeling from the public.”
