An elderly couple were threatened at knifepoint in their own home.

The masked man struck at their house on Bedford Avenue, Walkden, just after 9pm yesterday.

The robber kicked the front door in before threatening the couple with a 12-inch curved knife.

He then stole a handbag containing cash and cards. He also took a mobile phone before running off.

The couple were not injured but were badly shaken up after their ordeal Police are now appealing to anyone who has information about the robbery to come forward.

The offender is described as being in his 20s and wearing a hat with a piece of material hanging down with two eyeholes cut out. He was wearing all brown clothing and gloves.

Detective Sergeant Julie Connor, of Salford CID, said: "The couple are extremely upset to have had their privacy of their home invaded by this thief wielding a knife.

"No-one should be threatened in their sanctity of their own home and only someone who has been through such a traumatic ordeal will know what they are going through.

"That is why it is so important that we track this man down, arrest him and put him behind bars for a long time. We need to give this couple at least some semblance of satisfaction at seeing him sent down so I would ask that if anyone does know something that will help us, that they call us.

"We are doing a lot of inquiries in the area, including house-to-house visits, both to collect evidence and reassure members of our community who may be concerned."

Anyone with information is asked to call Salford CID on 0161 856 3553 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
