A motorist miraculously escaped injury when her car careered off the road and became wedged between two trees.
The 59-year-old woman was driving a Volvo S40 saloon along Chorley New Road in Horwich yesterday morning when the accident happened.
Her car left the road at the Beehive roundabout, crossed two lanes of traffic and a cycle lane, mounted the kerb and smashed into a tree.
The force of the impact caused her car to bounce backwards on to the second tree and become jammed.
Fire brigade watch commander, Charlie Harrison said: "She was very lucky.
"The lady was travelling from Middlebrook and turned left on to Chorley New Road and lost control.
"If she had not hit the tree, she would have ended up in the front garden of a sheltered homes complex."
The woman told police that her brakes had failed just before she lost control.
She managed to get out of the car before fire crews arrived and was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital as a precaution.
A recovery vehicle was called to winch the car out from the trees.
