A GYNAECOLOGIST has received a formal warning for “repeatedly”

looking at pornography while working at the Royal Bolton Hospital.

Dr Ahmad Shayeb, who works in obstetrics and gynaecology, had been due before a General Medical Council (GMC) hearing tomorrow.

He initially refused to accept a warning for the offence.

Dr Shayeb then changed his mind, leading to the cancellation of the hearing and the original sanction being taken.

The reprimand will remain on his record for five years, with his actions described as “highly inappropriate”.

The doctor, who now specialises in obstetrics — medicine concerning the female reproduction system — pregnancy, childbirth and gynaecology, committed the offences at Royal Bolton between October, 2009, and August, 2010.

The GMC warning states “Dr Shayeb repeatedly accessed pornographic material from hospital computers while on duty at his employing hospital trust.

“His actions were in breach of trust internet policy and were highly inappropriate.”

He has also been criticised for denying the offence and giving misleading information when an investigation into the matter was first launched.

His GMC warning says: “This conduct does not meet with the standards required of a doctor.

“It risks bringing the profession into disrepute and it must not be repeated.” The GMC has been unable to provide any more details on the case.

Dr Shayeb was working as a junior doctor at the Royal Bolton at the time — although junior doctors in the area are overseen by neighbouring Pennine Acute Trust, which runs Fairfield General Hospital in Bury.

However, both trusts have denied responsibility for Dr Shayeb and the investigation into the offences. Neither could say where he now works since qualifying in November 2010.

Heather Edwards, head of communications at RBH, said: “Our policy is that we have systems which block the vast majority of inappropriate sites, which are updated regularly and staff usage is monitored.”
