A BOLTON celebrity is spreading the word about a quarry protest via a social networking website.

Rivington Against Greenbelt Exploitation is holding a demonstration outside Montcliffe Quarry in Horwich at 10am today.

DJ and television presenter Vernon Kay re-Tweeted ed a message on his Twitter page about the event to his 474,000 followers earlier this week.

The protest is taking place ahead of a special planning meeting to discuss Armstrongs Aggregates’ plans to continue operating until 2020 to extract 1.4 million tonnes of minerals.

Bolton Council has received hundreds of letters, including 147 in favour and 149 against the proposals.

The planning officers have recommended the plans for approval.

One of the main concerns the objectors have is the number of HGVs which will be put on the roads around Horwich.

Marcus Simmons, spokesman for RAGE, said: “We are thrilled Vernon would do that.

Rivington and the moors are precious to people who live or have lived locally.

“I am not surprised someone like Vernon wanted to support our cause.”
