A FORMER high school teacher is forging a successful career as an artist.
Gerry Halpin, the former head of art at Rivington and Blackrod High School, has already made an impact on the North West art scene.
And next year looks set to be even brighter.
Mr Halpin, who has been awarded the MBE, started 2011 by being awarded a highly commended for his painting, Meandering River, at the West Lancashire Open Exhibition held at the Chapel Gallery in Ormskirk.
As a result, he was invited by the gallery’s curator to show his work in their forthcoming exhibition, Journeys.
Then he was appointed as one of four trustees of the Manchester Academy of Fine Art — former trustees include Lord Kenneth Clarke, the art historian, and artist Sir William Coldstream.
He will now be involved in taking the Academy to charity status
