First-class outlook for rail passengers

PASSENGERS at Blackrod Station will soon be benefiting from more than £1 million-worth of improvements.

The station was given permission last year for step-free access to platforms to benefit disabled travellers, a drop-off and pick-up point for passengers and changes to make the station fully compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act.

Now the turnaround and drop off facility has been completed, and work will start soon on the access. It is expected that phase will be completed by the summer.

Those works are costing £845,000, with funding coming from a variety of sources.

Transport for Greater Manchester said securing funding for the project has also unlocked a further investment of £310,000 from the National Stations Improvement Programme.

A spokesman said: “It will see Network Rail deliver a whole host of complimentary works to the station, the scope of which is being finalised at present.”
