Hairdressing move gets the nod

PLANS to convert an empty Westhoughton shop into a busy hairdressers have been given the go ahead.

Lewis Sproston, from Ather- ton, and his girlfriend, applied to transform Excelsior Press, a closed printing shop in Market Street, Westhoughton, into a hair salon.

Mr Sproston, speaking at a meeting of Bolton Council’s planning committee, said: “We have a client base of 540 people. If we are going to be bringing anything to this town it will be new people. I think the council should support young people who are trying to establish themselves.”

The couple say their cus- tomers live in Manchester and Standish.

Cllr Chris Peacock, who rep- resents Westhoughton North and Chew Moor, said: “It is the first building you see when you walk on that side of Market Street. I am fully supportive of it. The reason why there is so many beauty salons is because the people of Westhoughton like to take care of them- selves.”

Cllr David Wilkinson, who represents Westhoughton South, added: “There are a lot of hairdressers but a lot of peo- ple love to be beautified.”

Councillors raised concerns about customers parking on the road in front of the shop but Mr Sproston said he would advise them to use the avail- able car parks.
