A SOCIAL entrepreneur who is helping to transform the lives of troubled youths in Bolton has been advising the Government on how it can set up similar community projects.
Liz Douglas, who set up the Roots Project on the Pungle Estate in Westhoughton, was invited to speak at a round table discussion at the cabinet office of Nick Hurd, minister of civil society, last week about how the Government can create and support similar projects and support people like her.
She has since been invited back to take part in further discussions as part of David Cameron’s The Big Society Agenda.
Ms Douglas said: “I was humbled to be invited to the meeting and to speak at such a high level, the Minister spoke very encouraging words about the Roots Project and I am looking forward to being more involved in the setting of The Big Society, its agendas and making sure that social entrepreneurs are offered the well deserved support. Their efforts are not always recognised.”
Last year she was appointed as a Government “talent scout” on the back of her work. It involves tracking down the brains behind the UK’s most successful community projects.
She has also previously spoken at Government events looking at identifying and tackling the root causes of last year’s August riots.
The single mum was named in the top 100 Unseen Powerful Women Who Change The World last year and was the only entry for the North of England.
