A TINY baby joined walkers in memory of his sister who has inspired the founding of a first-of-its-kind charity.

It is a year since Lagan Katherine Anne Grant lost her fight against a devastating heart condition when she was only 15 weeks old.

Her parents, Carren Bell and Barry Grant, organised a remembrance walk in memory of their little girl and to raise money for Lagan’s Foundation, which provides essential support for parents of children born with congenital heart defect (CHD) or feeding difficulties — conditions which Lagan had.

The couple’s son Lochlyn was a part of the team, although at only six weeks old he travelled in the car with his mum providing support and encouragement to the walkers.

Friends, family, including Mr Grant’s uncle Andy Grant who co-ordinated the event, and charity supporters walked about 24 miles from Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool, where Lagan was treated, to the Reebok Stadium in Horwich, her home town.

Lochlyn is being described as a “miracle baby” after suffering lifethreatening complications and had to be given an emergency blood transfusion.

The youngster has been diagnosed with “hole in the heart” syndrome, a condition which 25 per cent of the population have, and a condition that can clear up on its own.

He is also being doted on by his sister Ceridwen, aged nine.

Carren, who lives with her family in Horwich, said: “Someone was watching over him.

He is a miracle baby.”

She added: “We are hoping to have raised around £2,000 from the walk. There were 10 adults, and 10 children, who joined the walkers for the end two miles.

“The weather was cold and we had hailstone, rain, all weathers. Those taking part were tremendous. I never imagined it would be such a huge success.”

Carren added: “Nothing makes the loss easier, but it makes the hard work worthwhile. It is about doing something positive in Lagan’s memory.”

Lagan’s Foundation is recruiting volunteers from all walks of life to help families of children aged five or under in need of support and advice across the country.

The only requirement is that those applying are over 18 years old.

Volunteers should log on to lagans.org.uk.
