BOXING fans say they have lost hundreds of pounds after Amir Khan’s Las Vegas fight was called off.

Hundreds of sports enthusiasts booked travel packages for Las Vegas to watch Khan face Lamont Peterson a week tomorrow. The bout has been cancelled because Peterson failed a drugs test and while fans can get ticket refunds, some cannot get travel refunds.

They now face the choice of losing all their money or travelling anyway and not seeing a fight.

Dave Turner, aged 23, of Bradford, said he and his 25-year-old brother, John, paid expedia a total of £1,400 for a package deal.

They are due to fly from Manchester to Las Vegas via Philadelphia on May 18 and return four days later.

Mr Turner said: “I couldn’t believe it when I found out the fight was off.

“I went to Vegas before to watch Ricky Hatton fight and, even though it’s quite a novel place, it’s not really the kind of place you want to go back to unless you’ve got a special reason.

“I’ve got my £160 ticket money back but it looks like I’ll lose £700 unless I go. It’s not on that people have been left in this situation.”

Expedia has not yet said if it will refund the packages.

A spokesman for Sports Corporation, which sold fight tickets, confirmed all fans would get ticket refunds.

And Amir said: “I can only apologise for the 10,000 boxing fans who bought tickets and were going to attend the fight.

“Most of them will fly into Vegas and spend £1,000s of pounds to see the rematch.”

A spokesman for Khan’s Gloves Gym in Prince Street, Bolton, said they would help fans get ticket refunds where necessary.

Flexible Trips was running a travel package for the fight.

The Bolton News asked Flexible Trips parent company Thomas Cook if customers would get refunds but got no reply at the time of going to press.
