A BRAVE toddler who travelled to America for specialist cancer treatment has been given the all-clear.

Little Lucas Thorpe is too young to understand what all the fuss is about, but his parents, Jodie Rothwell and Dale Thorpe, say they are overjoyed at the news.

The 19-month-old has endured months of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and a 10-week stint in the US for specialist proton treatment for a rare form of bladder cancer, called rhabdomyosarcoma.

While in America, Lucas suffered a series of setbacks, including septicaemia and pneumonia, and at one point it looked unlikely he would pull through.

But he defied the odds and this week doctors confirmed the treatment worked and his bladder is free from cancer.

Ms Rothwell, aged 28, said: “When his doctor rang me, I thought it was going to be bad news, but I couldn’t believe it.

“I didn’t think it would have been this quick to get rid of it and I thought he would need some more treatment.”

Lucas will still need regular check-ups in case the cancer returns and he is still having problems with his feet and some of his fingers, which were badly affected by the septicaemia in the US.

Ms Rothwell said: “He is doing absolutely brilliantly, he has started walking and he has some special slippers with a hard sole in, so he can wear them with his bandages.

“We call them his big boy shoes.

“He was so desperate to walk, he was craw- ling around with his sister’s shoes on his hands.”

She added: “He is catching up now. He has had setbacks, but he doesn’t let anything stop him.

“He has got over the main hurdle now and we are so happy.

“I just want to thank everyone who has supported us.”

Lucas’s parents are planning a charity fun day in the summer to raise money for the Manchester Children’s Hospital and The Christie, to say “thank you”.
