Cycling hero Jason Kenny will be honoured in Bolton
Bolton golden boy Jason Kenny will be honoured with a huge public celebration.
The cyclist, Britain’s first double gold medallist of London 2012, will receive a champion’s welcome in Victoria Square on Saturday, September 1.
Kenny won the men’s team sprint and the individual sprint, adding to the gold and silver medal he won in Beijing.
Council chiefs have revealed some details of the celebration that is set to take place. From 11am street performers and dancers will provide entertainment in Victoria Square.
At noon, Kenny will come out, with his medals, on to Bolton’s town hall steps, to talk about his Olympic experiences and greet his fans.
A huge TV screen will also show footage of Kenny’s successful races for the thousands that are expected to attend.
Kenny said: "It has meant so much to me to win two Golds for Great Britain at the Games. I have been humbled by all the messages of support and congratulation from so many people across the country, particularly from my home town of Bolton, and this means a lot to me.”
The Mayor of Bolton, Councillor Guy Harkin, will later host a civic reception for the cyclist, his family and civic dignitaries.
Councillor Harkin added: “We are immensely proud of Jason and what he has achieved. We want to hold this public celebration because it is only right that we mark his achievements in some way and that local people get to pay homage to him.
“We had more than 130,000 people lining the streets for the torch relay, which shows the level of enthusiasm that’s out there for the Olympics. We are expecting thousands of people will come out to honour Jason and l’d encourage everyone to come down and celebrate with us.
“And to have this remarkable achievement in the year which the council has marked as its Year of Sport – well it can’t get better than that.”
Bolton Council has marked 2012 as its Year of Sport due to a whole host of sporting events and activities taking place in the town.

Well done, you have done us proud Jason.
Forget the sad b43tards who will find fault with anything and anyone.
I for one am proud that you have won the medals, and you should be proud to be from BOWTON.
