A BOLTON Wanderers fan had a lucky escape after falling from the upper tier of the away stand during Saturday’s match at the Sheffield Wednesday Hillsborough ground.

Officials from the Yorkshire club said the 44-year-old man was celebrating Mark Davies ’s 65th minute winner for The Whites when he fell about 15 feet from the upper to the lower stand of the Leppings Lane end.

A Sheffield Wednesday spokesman said: “It seems the chap in question was running down the aisle when they equalised and took another step too far.

“His mate has tried to pull him back, but he’s gone over the edge and has not suffered any serious injury.

“We’ll be reporting the incident to the council as a matter of course.”

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: “He was spoken to by officers. He had an injured hand and appeared shaken, but nothing more severe than that.” Commenting on Sheffield Wednesday fans’ forums, one onlooker said: “I thought he was a gonner but after some help managed to walk away.”

Another added: “Couldn’t believe my eyes. Proper dive over top. Straight down head first, just two legs poking up in air from between the rows.”

The fan, who has not been named, was among a crowd of 26,598 who watched Bolton’s 2-1 victory, which elevated the club to 13th place in the Championship.
