MOTORISTS will be banned from parking on a number of streets under new proposals designed to encourage more shoppers into Horwich .

Plans put forward by Bolton Council are to introduce ‘no waiting at any time’ restrictions on 10 streets.

The parking ban will include one side of St John Street, New Brunswick Street, Robinson Street, Rawlinson Street, Rawlinson Street from Winter Hey Lane to Abbott Street, as well as both sides of Captain Street and Harrison Street and one side of Back Winter Hey Lane from its junction with Captain Street to the junction with Back Captain Street.

Horwich councillors approved the majority of the restrictions at the latest Horwich Town Council meeting, saying they will solve “road blocks” and improve access to car parks.

The restrictions are designed to complement the new three-hour maximum stay in one of the car parks, which has already been introduced.

Councillors say this will free up more spaces for shoppers Bolton Council says the proposals have been drawn up at the request of residents, businesses and the Town Council.

A spokesman said: “People have until October 10, to comment and we will then review the comments. The proposed restrictions are part of a wider plan for Horwich Town Centre.”

Cllr Kevin McKeon said: “Making one of the car parks three hours is, a good idea.

“It will free up car parking spaces and encourage more people to shop in Horwich.”

Councillors asked for the ‘return within limit’ on the car park to be reduced from all day to a few hours, allowing people to continue to pop into town throughout the day.

Cllr Stephen Rock said: “I would not want restrictions to be placed everywhere.”

“This is a relatively small scheme and I don’t want to see restrictions across the town so there is no where left to park.”
