A WOMAN whose elderly parents were almost killed in a car accident is calling for more action to slow traffic at the scene of the crash.

A year ago today, Anne Turner, aged 81, and her 78-year-old husband, John, were hit head on by another car as they sat outside their daughter’s home in Gilnow Road, Heaton.

Dr and Mrs Turner, from Worsley, were taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital with serious injuries — and now their daughter is calling for better traffic calming measures.

Andrea Taberner, aged 48, said: “It’s a year since my parents had the accident and the council have done absolutely nothing to alleviate the situation.

“It’s like a bomb waiting to go off on that corner.

“There should be speed bumps all down Tudor Avenue and a police presence because they would catch so many people speeding.

“My dad’s made an okay recovery but my mum has not been the same. She still has pain in her legs and is nervous about travelling in a car.”

Council leader Cllr Cliff Morris, Cllr Linda Thomas and Cllr Akhtar Zaman visited the elderly couple after the accident to discuss what improvements could be made in the area.

Since then Bolton Council has consulted with residents and installed a zebra crossing in Gilnow Road and introduced waiting restrictions to improve visibility along the bend between Tudor Ave and Gilnow Road.

But Mrs Taberner, a lecturer, says more should be done to slow the traffic along the road.

She added: “The speed limit should only be 20mph down there and there should be speed bumps. It’s a very dangerous corner.”

The accident took place on the same bend where 23-year-old Lindsay Neale, from Great Lever, was killed in March 2011.

Yet Cllr Zaman said the council has done all it can to prevent accidents on the road.

He said: “The crossing is new which will hopefully make crossing easier for residents. We have asked the officers to improve in the area.

“We have done as much as we can and done what was required of us.”

Police said that no-one was arrested over the incident.
