A YOB has been jailed for wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with offensive comments about the police hours after two officers were murdered.

Barry Thew, aged 39, of Wolsey Street, Radcliffe, was jailed for eight months after admitting a public order offence by displaying writing with intention to cause harassment, alarm or distress Police arrested Thew on Tuesday, September 18 at 2.15pm after he was seen wearing the t-shirt in Radcliffe town centre.

The T-shirt had the words “One less pig: perfect justice” on the front and “Killacopforfun.com ha ha” on the back.

He was spotted by officers less than three-and-a-half hours after PC Nicola Hughes and PC Fiona Bone were gunned down while on duty in Hattersley, Manchester.

udge Peter Lakin, sentencing Thew at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court yesterday, Thursday, jailed him for four months for the offence and an additional four months for breaching a suspended jail term.

Insp Bryn Williams, of the Radcliffe Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "While officers on the ground were just learning of and trying to come to terms with the devastating news that two colleagues had been murdered, Thew thought nothing of going out in public with a t-shirt daubed with appalling hand written comments on.

"Thankfully the overwhelming response from the public - who have inundated us with messages of support and condolence - prove that Thew is the exception and not the rule and our communities were right behind us at our darkest hour.

"To mock or joke about the tragic events of that morning is morally reprehensible and Thew has rightly been convicted and sentenced for his actions."
