Peter Kay joke voted funniest one-liner of all time
COMEDIAN Peter Kay has been crowned king of the one-liner.
The Bolton funnyman’s joke about a Dutch girl with inflatable shoes has been voted the funniest one-liner ever.
Researchers found 180 popular gags online and asked 6,000 adults to vote for their favourites.
The 40-year-old’s joke which put him at the top of the chuckle chart was: “I met a Dutch girl with inflatable shoes last week, phoned her up to arrange a date but unfortunately she’d popped her clogs.”
A spokesman for paid-for survey site 2Brewarded.co.uk, which commissioned the study, said: “Britain clearly has a great sense of humour. Many of the jokes in top 50 are from true, British comic legends.
“Gags from comedy geniuses such as Peter Kay, Michael McIntyre and Tommy Cooper are all ranked highly.”
The Farnworth-born Phoenix Nights star also had a joke in fourth place: “I went to a restaurant that serves breakfast at any time. So I ordered French toast during the Renaissance.”
Tommy Cooper came second place with his joke: “Police arrested two kids yesterday, one was drinking battery acid, the other was eating fireworks. They charged one and let the other one off.”
And he also took third place with: “Apparently, one in five people in the world are Chinese. And there are five people in my family, so it must be one of them. It’s either my mum or my dad. Or my older brother, Colin. Or my younger brother, Ho-Chan-Chu. But I think it’s Colin.”
Fifth place went to John Bishop for his gag: “Being an England supporter is like being the over-optimistic parents of the fat kid on sports day.”
Peter, who went to Mount St Joseph High School, also landed 29th place for his gag: “I saw a fat person wearing a sweatshirt with Guess on it. I said ‘thyroid problem?’”
Other comedians with jokes in the top 50 include Ricky Gervais, Rowan Atkinson, Benny Hill, Bill Bailey, Tim Vine, Michael McIntyre and Sarah Millican.
