Enthusiast’s new book charts changes since heyday of Manchester Bolton and Bury Canal
AFTER years dedicated to helping to restore the Manchester Bolton and Bury Canal, retired lecturer Paul Hindle knows just about every inch of its 15-mile length.
So there was no one better to document the changes along the canal since its 19th century heyday.
A new book pairing old pictures with modern ones, taken from the same position, shows just how different the canal now looks, although many recognisable features such as bridges, still remain.
Dr Hindle hopes that the book, “Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal Through Time” will provide history and canal enthusiasts with an interesting time lapse insight into the local area as well as helping raise funds for the Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal Society. The book’s 186 pages are crammed with photographs and short descriptions of the views along the length of the canal.
A third of the book is dedicated to images on the Bolton branch of the canal from Ringley, with its locks, up to the Bolton terminus, which is now Church Wharf between the parish church and St Peter’s Way.
Dr Hindle spent several weeks earlier this summer visiting various places along the canal and taking new photographs from the same position as old images the society already possesses in its collection to compare the changes that have talen place.
He said: “It has been a very enjoyable thing to do. When you compare some of the pairs of pictures, it is quite astonishing how much change there has been over the years.”
The book is now on sale at £14.99, and is available from all good book stores and websites as well as from the society, which receives a royalty from proceeds of the sales.
In the meantime the work contines and the society is continuing its efforts to restore the canal.
The latest project is to improve public access to the locks at Nob End, Little Lever, by digging out topsoil and removing weeds.
“We should be able to see the outline of the locks much more clearly then,” said Dr Hindle.
