A LUCKY winner from Bolton has won a top prize worth £500 in our Bid Lo competition — for just 2p.
Football fan Alan Whenlock, aged 72, from Heaton, has won two Bolton Wanderers season tickets for the remaining 2013/2014 season — and has already treated his daughter and her partner to watch the Whites’ match against Sheffield Wednesday last Saturday.
The reverse auction competition, which works by giving the prize to the lowest unique bid, attracted entries from across the borough and beyond when it ran for two weeks earlier this month.
Readers had to send in a bidding cheque with their bid amount, or send a text, between September 30, and October 14, and the lowest bid which was the only one of its kind won.
Mr Whenlock, who worked for 18 years in the Royal Corps of Signals, said: “My daughter, Pauline, is a big Wanderers fan.
“I put in about 10 different bids using the coupons that were in the paper but I’m surprised and delighted I managed to win them for just 2p.
“When I was a youngster I got my first season ticket for 18 shillings and threepence — but they cost hundreds of pounds nowadays, so I’m really glad I’ve won them so that the whole family can enjoy them.”
Other winners include Alison MacDonald from Warrington, who won up to £2,500 worth of artificial lawn from Lawn Land, Ms Brogden from Darwen who won a year’s worth of fish and chips from Holly Tree Fish and Chips Shop, and Lesley from Winsford, Cheshire, who won a gold car wash every week for a whole year worth £440 at Toota Ma Hoota.
There are six more weeks of prizes to bid on, including the chance to win a £5,900 bathroom by sending in bidding cheques available from The Bolton News over the next week.
