DONATION tins are available in Bolton for people to help the thousands left stricken by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

Bolton Interfaith Council (BIC), at The Bolton Hub, Bold Street, is calling on organisations, schools, colleges, universities, businesses, community groups, faith groups, places of worship, local authorities and individuals to request one of 50 sealed tins.

Four million people have been forced to leave their homes since the typhoon struck almost two weeks ago and the death toll is expected to exceed 10,000.

Chan Parmar, strategic officer at Bolton Interfaith Council, said: “Thousands of people have lost their homes and loved ones.

“We want to help raise funds for the tragic victims of the typhoon which has had a devastating impact.

“It’s only right that we should try and help in any way we can.”

BIC is co-ordinating the collection, following a request from the Manchester office of The British Red Cross, who will collect the tins during the week of December 9.

The British public raised more than £50 million to help people affected by Typhoon Haiyan in just one week, officials said.

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) said the “incredible response” from the British public was helping to fund crucial aid in some of the worst hit parts of the islands.

The money, which includes £5 million from the UK Government and £600,000 from the Scottish Government, is helping provide much-needed clean water, food, medical care and materials for temporary shelter to those affected.

DEC said its aid agencies had so far reached some 590,000 survivors across the country.

The scale of the disaster remained enormous, with more than 13 million people now known to be affected, DEC said.

BIC has been involved in two previous appeals, following the 2010 Haiti earthquake and Pakistan floods, also in 2010, when they helped collect donations of more than £5,000.

Collection tins are available by contacting BIC on 01204 546110.
