A 10 mile walk will be thirsty work for a group of charity supporters.

More than 150 people have signed up to take part in the first 10 Miles 10 Pubs walk in aid of Bolton Hospice.

It will take place on Saturday, September 27, starting at The Rivington, Horrobin Lane, before stopping off at other pubs in Anglezarke, Adlington and Horwich.

Friends Donna Knowles and Jill Reece decided to organise the event after taking part in the Pendle Pub Walk, which started six years ago with 50 walkers. It now attracts more than 1,000 walkers and raised £37,000 for Pendleside Hospice this year.

Families are being invited to take part and Mrs Knowles is doing the walk with her husband of 16 years, Mark, and children Adam, aged 14, and Rebecca, aged nine.

Mrs Knowles, who lives in Anderton and is a manager at Electricity North West, said: “It started six years ago in Pendle with 50 walkers, then this year they had 1,000 and had to have two starting points.

“We didn’t know how it would take off but we have just gone past the 150 point.”

The pair are hoping their version will become as popular, also providing a boost for the pubs taking part, who have each agreed to donate £50 and will have their names emblazoned on walkers’ T-shirts.

The walkers taking part have paid £10 to enter and people can raise additional sponsorship if they wish.

Mrs Reece, who lives in Horwich, works as a teaching assistant at Sharples School and is also a hairdresser, will take part with her husband of 25 years, Michael, and their sons, Joshua, aged 18, and Jacob, aged 16.

Organisers hope the event will become as successful and popular as those arranged by the hospice.

Its annual Midnight Memories walk, now in its eighth year, attracted 1,000 people in June and the 5km Colour Run, held for the first time in August, raised £30,000.

A spokesman for Bolton Hospice said: “We’re always delighted when our supporters come up with their own fundraising ideas and we’re confident that the 10 Miles 10 Pubs walk will be a great success — what’s not to like?

“Events organised by our supporters in the community are just as important as the ones we organise ourselves in raising the £2.5 million needed every year to fund the hospice’s services, so we hope lots of people will get involved and sign up for the pub walk.”

Registration will be held between 9am and 10am on Saturday, September 27, at The Rivington, Horrobin Lane.

The other pubs taking part are the Yew Tree Inn, Anglezarke, The Spinners at Cowling, The Black Horse at Limbrick, Spinners Arms, Adlington, The White Bear Inn, Adlington, Elephant and Castle, Adlington, Spinners Arms, Adlington and the Bay Horse, Horwich, before returning to The Rivington.

Entry costs £10, including a T-shirt, and children and dogs go free. E mail donna.knowles40@yahoo.co.uk before Tuesday.
