A CHARITY campaigner from Bromley Cross was thrilled after grabbing a “selfie” with national treasure Stephen Fry following his appearance in Manchester.

The comedian, actor and broadcaster was talking about his new autobiography More Fool Me at the Bridgewater Hall, and super fan Lucy Openshaw saw it as an ideal opportunity to add to her growing selfie collection.

A selfie is a posed photograph where the photo taker appears in the shot, often alongside another person or a landmark.

After seeing a report in The Bolton News about Blackrod designer Paul Barnes and his challenge of taking a selfie with a stranger every day in September, the 25-year-old decided she wanted to do the same.

While Mr Barnes is raising money for Cancer Research UK during his challenge, Ms Openshaw, who lives in Hough Lane in Bromley Cross is doing it on behalf of the mental health charity Mind — which Mr Fry is the president of.

The self-employed dog walker said: “I went with a friend to see him talk and it was just amazing, then at a book signing afterwards I asked him for a selfie and he was happy to.

"I can’t think of a better person to pose with, not only is he my all time hero, but he is the president of Mind, who I am raising money for during my Stranger Selfie challenge.”

Mr Fry has talked openly about suffering from bipolar disorder and Ms Openshaw said he has helped countless people with mental health issues.

Her selfie campaign has also seen her pose for shots with Bolton Wanderers stars including Tim Ream and Chung-Yong Lee.
