A Bolton police officer whose father died in a motorbike accident has scooped two awards for a film he made to raise awareness of the dangers of riding while tired.

Inspector Dave Mangan, aged 43, was with his father Mike when he was killed in Wheddon Cross, Somerset, on September 11 last year.

Mr Mangan, aged 72, from Turton, was struck by an oncoming vehicle while overtaking and was on the last 10-mile stretch of a 320-mile journey, prompting his family to believe that tiredness played a role in his death.

Insp Mangan, aged 43, led a ride to Land’s End from Preston in memory of his father in April, and will compete in Ironman UK 2015 as part of an ongoing campaign to raise money for the Air Ambulance.

A film about that fateful ride was made earlier this year by Insp Mangan, which has already been viewed by more 75,000 people on YouTube.

The film, Mike’s Last Ride, has won an award from the Event and Visual Communication Association in the social media category, as well as a silver award at Cannes Corporate Media and TV Awards for informational films.

It tells the story of the fatal collision and offers advice to riders on how to stay safe on the roads.

Insp Mangan, a road policing officer for Lancashire Police, said: “I created this short film to raise awareness in the biking community regarding the dangers of riding when you are tired and the risks bikers face when they make decisions at the end of the day.

“The response to our film, from bikers and members of the public, has been fantastic, and to then be recognised by national and international awards is amazing.

“My family and I are still trying to come to terms with what happened. We miss him every day, but it is so rewarding to see something so positive coming out of such a personal tragedy and we are so grateful for everyone’s support.

“I’m hoping these awards will help to further raise the profile of our campaign and that the film continues to send a reminder that it doesn’t matter how experienced you are, riding while tired can have serious or even fatal consequences.”

In May, a verdict of accidental death was given at the inquest into Mr Mangan’s death in May.
