A MAN suffered burns tackling a chip pan fire.

Firefighters were called out shortly before 9.30pm on Saturday after reports of someone trapped in a flat in Bradford Street, The Haulgh, when a chip pan had caught.

Although the fire was out when the fire service arrived, the flat’s occupant had suffered burns on his hands and forehead from attempting to put it out.

It is thought he had left the pan unattended.

The man was assessed by paramedics and taken to hospital.

Watch manager Ian Read said: “The use of chip pans is still very much an issue for the fire service. Using chip pans and leaving cooking unattended can lead to fires occurring.

"The issue with an old-fashioned chip pan is the oil continues to heat up if left unattended, unlike a modern deep-fat fryer where the temperature can be controlled.

“The occupant was very lucky, and it was fortunate he only sustained burns to his hands and forehead.”
