YOUNGSTERS learnt how to “show racism the red card” at a special community event at the Macron.

Pupils from three primary schools in Bolton were invited to join in workshops on how to tackle the issue of racism and were asked to put questions on the subject to a panel of special guests.

The event was organised by the Show Racism the Red Card campaign which aims to use football as a way to educate against racism.

Special guests on the day included Wanderers legend Tony Kelly, former Liverpool player Howard Gayle and members of the Whites’ women’s team Charlotte Walsh and Hannah Pendlebury.

There was also an appearance from mascot Lofty Junior.

Former fans favourite Mr Kelly said: “It has been a great event with some very intelligent kids who have really engaged with the issues.

“It is all about getting the message out there through education, barriers have been beaten when it comes to racism but we have a long way to go to get the message out there and football can be a great way of educating people.”
