RESTAURANT owners are hoping to land a diner with a difference — by putting the fuselage of an aeroplane in the heart of Bolton’s student land.

The owners of The Steak House will find out today whether they will be allowed to put the central part of a disused Boeing Air Italy plane at their base by the University of Bolton.

It will mean the loss of the landmark red double decker bus in Deane Road. It has been the home of the takeaway since 2010 but has fallen into disrepair.

Under plans, part of the plane would be converted into the restaurant’s kitchen, while the rest would to be used as a seating area for diners.

Planning officers have recommended councillors grant permission for the ambitious scheme at tomorrow's planning committee.

However, they argue permission should expire in two years time while its managers are monitored to see whether the eatery is being kept tidy and sticking to its opening hours. In a report to the committee, council officer Jeanette Isherwood said the plane plans had the potential to regenerate the area.

She said: “The fuselage would create an unusual feature in this particular setting. However the design and appearance itself is innovative and could prove appealing, particularly as it is sited adjacent to both college and university buildings.”

Owners of The Steak House were unavailable for comment.
