Bolton Mountain Rescue team were called at about 2.20pm this afternoon after the boy crashed his bike while riding in Darwen Moor.
He had been riding with his father and younger brother in the Lyon's Den area of the moor when his bike slipped on some gravel.
The rescue team arrived on the scene just after 3pm and were met by the North West Air Ambulance which had been scrambled from Barton airfield.
The boy was then airlifted to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.
