PEDESTRIANS were shocked to see this car stranded in the middle of a traffic island without a driver on a busy main road.

The picture was snapped by a passer-by on Bury Road just after 1pm today, near the shops in Tonge Fold.

The 56-year-old from Belmont, who was in the area visiting friends, said: "A few of us saw it and think that the driver must have been parked the car and left off the handbrake because there was no one in the car.

"It seems to have rolled down the road into the traffic island and stopped.

"The car's bonnet is damaged.

"It is fortunate it was not more serious, and I just hope it raises awareness to check your handbrake is on after parking."
