A TEENAGER was taken to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a taxi outside a nightclub.

Police and firefighters were called to Nelson Square in the town centre shortly after 3am this morning.

The 18-year-old had been run over by a black Vauxhall Zafira taxi and was trapped under the vehicle from her waist downwards.

The fire service helped remove the woman from under the car and she was rushed to Salford Royal with a suspected fractured pelvis and leg injuries.

She was conscious and breathing, and her injuries are thought to be severe but not life-threatening.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “The woman had been run over and was under the vehicle when we arrived at the scene.

“A technical response unit from Leigh also attended.

“We assisted the ambulance crew in providing first aid and getting her ready to be put in an ambulance, and then slid her from beneath the car.”

It is believed the teenager had been attending a student night event at a nightclub in Nelson Square.

A spokesman for North West Ambulance Service confirmed paramedics were called to the scene at 3.13am and a young woman was taken to Salford Royal with pelvic injuries after being involved in a car accident.

The spokesman added: “The call to us was made from outside After Dark nightclub.”

The Bolton News understands After Dark nightclub - which is now known as Trinity - was closed at the time of the incident and was not involved.

A spokesman for the University of Bolton said the incident had not been reported to student services and so he could not confirm whether the woman is a University of Bolton student.

Police are currently investigating after the taxi driver involved in the incident was allegedly punched and his car damaged.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police confirmed officers were called to the scene at 3.15am.

He added: “Police are investigating reports the taxi driver involved was punched and had his car damaged, punched and kicked and his rear windscreen smashed.

“The alleged attacker, who was described as black, left the scene with a group of other people before police arrived and no arrest was made.”

Anyone with information on the incident should call police on 101.
