TRAFFIC came to a standstill around Bolton this morning after a serious crash on the M60.
Two lanes of the motorway were closed between Junction 14 for the M61, East Lancs Road, and Junction 13 for Worsley, causing tailbacks into Bolton.
Traffic was queuing anticlockwise because of an accident involving two lorries and a car which happened at around 5.15am.
Fire crews from Farnworth were called to the accident although no one was trapped.
Congestion backed up on the M61 to Junction 5 for Westhoughton and on the M62 to J20 for Rochdale.
Queues were also backed up to junction 17 at Prestwich and Whitefield on the M60 anticlockwise.
Motorists were warned to use a different route this morning as the traffic backs up in Bolton onto the A666.
One Bolton motorist sent this picture to show traffic backed up to the junction of Bradford Street on the A666.
There have also been reports of people driving on the wrong side of Manchester Road because of the delays.
Warren Fox, who works in Manchester Road said it was "carnage" in the area.
He said: "I phoned the police because they were going round the wrong side of the traffic lights at Asda to turn right at weston st.
The situation has likely not been helped by a lane closure on St Peter's Way, which is taking place as Network Rail continue to work at the Farnworth Tunnel Site.
