Eyewitness, Rob Lee, told us: "I was driving past just before the fire brigade turned up. The smoke could be seen from the top of Egerton. When I got closer there were a lot of people panicking."

Eyewitness Bill Glancy said: "The fire was horrendous. The staff from the supermarket came out with fire extinguishers and made everybody get back. People were really scared – there was lots of black smoke everywhere. The building isn't that far from the petrol station.

"The staff were saying 'get back' and then all of a sudden there was an explosion. I think it came from a bag full of compost. It was really scary, there were lots of plastic bags on fire. The whole building was alight."

19-year-old Danielle Wesley, of Astley Bridge, said: "At first didn't even know there was a fire but then got told it wasn't a drill, so was quite worried. We were evacuated from the building very quickly and safely we then moved to near HSBC as we were told there was De-icer in the outbuilding which is extremely flammable.

"I then heard popping which was the De-icer starting to go up the fire crew got to the scene extremely quickly and managed to put the fire out after a little while it was still shut off but the De-icer cans had gone some distance I'm very grateful for the fire crew who were there they handled it amazingly and so quickly thankfully no one was hurt."
