THIS photograph will bring back memories for some of our older readers.

It shows dozens of local people gathering at the bus station in Moor Lane ready to board coaches for the annual Bolton Holidays in 1947.

The days of the town emptying for the traditional wakes weeks are long gone but in the past all businesses, mills and firms would shut up shop and everyone would head for the seaside.

There was a time when reporters and photographers from the, then, Bolton Evening News would be sent out to Blackpool and Wales, among other seaside destinations, to talk to local people enjoying their holidays and their thoughts and photos would feature in the paper the next day.

These were very special holidays for many of the families as it meant a welcome break from the hard work of the cotton mills and a chance to relax and get away from it all.

Perhaps you have memories of the Bolton Holidays you would share with us.
