AFTER celebrating the New Year with the 'all clear' from cancer, a Bolton schoolboy is facing his second battle against the deadly disease.

Kyle Buckley, from Deane, spent two years undergoing intense chemotherapy, resulting in ill heath and the loss of his hair, in order to overcome rhabdomyosarcoma.

But three months after being given the official all clear from the doctors, the 11-year-old and his family have been handed another crushing blow as the cancer resurfaced.

In March a routine MRI scan revealed two tumours on Kyle's lymph nodes at the bottom of his spine.

The St Bede’s Primary School pupil now is now undergoing another course of chemotherapy but, due to the 'aggressive' nature of the cancer, consultants have warned that there may be no cure and have advised seeking help through medical trials.

Friends and family are now rallying around to raise funds for Kyle should he be accepted onto the medical trials which could mean him travelling to London or the USA in search of a cure for his cancer.

Mum Carol said: "We are unsure of what trials or treatments are next for us, or indeed if he will be accepted, but as his mum I cannot give up.

"As a family we will continue to do everything in our power to try and make my special little boy well again.

"It is inevitable that we will need substantial funding for upcoming trials or treatment that Kyle will be accepted for.

"There has been lots of fundraising going on and we have been overwhelmed by the support everyone has offered — it's been lovely.

"I lost my husband when we had only been married three weeks, Kyle was only nine months old when my husband died of bowel cancer. I did not think it would happen to my son as well.

"Kyle is a fighter, he has dealt with it all really well. He's so strong and never moans at all, which is what he has been like all the way through. He just wants to get on with it."

Kyle was first diagnosed with cancer at the age of eight after a lump was found on his wrist and under his arm.

It was an aggressive form of tissue cancer — rhabdomyosarcoma — and for two years he under went chemotherapy and radiotherapy to fight it off, losing his hair in the process.

He was also left severely deaf as a result of an allergic reaction to one of the drugs he was treated with and now wears two hearing aids.

By December though the cancer had been all but defeated and Kyle's courage was recognised with a special award from Cancer Research UK Kids and Teens.

Last week he started a fresh course of chemotherapy treatment, with another session planned for the coming weeks but there will need to be at least a three week gap between the treatment and starting any potential medical trails.

In the meantime fundraising continues, including family friend Danny Stanton who will be taking part in the Ironman UK triathlon in Bolton later this year.

He has set up a Make Kyle Smile Again Just Giving page.

On Saturday Carol's colleagues at Morrisons in Chorley Old Road will be holding an all-day fundraiser which will include baths of beans and male colleagues braving a leg wax.

Fellow pupils from St Bede’s will taking part in bag packing while dressed as superheroes from 11am.
