FIRE crews were called to tackle a blaze at a bedsit in Heaton after an extension lead overheated and caught fire.

Three fire engines from Farnworth, Horwich and Ramsbottom were called to the property in Hartington Road at 12.15pm on Friday and spent two hours at the scene.

The blaze was contained to the front room of the building , which belongs to the landlord, and caused fire a smoke damage to the contents. The fire also damaged the house's front wall and window, which was left cracked and blackened.

Four of the six people who live there were in the home at the time, and were evacuated after they smelled smoke.

The landlord, who asked not to be named, said: "It was only a small fire after the extension cord caught fire. In one room there is a bit of fire and smoke damage, but it was only a small incident and nobody was hurt."
