PRIMARY school pupils in Blackrod are getting in on the fun ahead of this weekend's scarecrow festival.

Children in the nursery at Blackrod Church School have made their own scarecrow ahead of the event, which will feature 109 creations taking over the village.

The youngsters will proudly display their scarecrow during the festival on Saturday and Sunday, with the school also holding its summer fair over the two days.

It was created with the help of the Wilko store at Middlebrook, with staff providing the equipment and their assistance.

Staff will also hold craft sessions at the school during the weekend.

Nursery teacher Lorraine Small said: "The children had a lovely time, it was great fun and the guys from Wilko were fabulous."

A spokesman for Wilko added: "We loved it, all the children are lovely. We're really looking forward to the Scarecrow Festival over the weekend."

As part of the festival, residents, businesses, schools and churches all create their own weird and wonderful scarecrows and bathe the village in colour.

An official programme is available for £2 which marks the location of all 109 scarecrows to ensure that visitors see them all.

The school's summer fair, open from 10am to 5pm on both days, will include fairground rides, adult sized lazer quest, bouncy castles, slides and the usual tombola, lucky dip and raffles.

Disney characters will also be in attendance to allow youngsters to take home a commemoration of the day with him.

Blackrod Community Centre will also be open for the first time during the festival from 11am to 4pm, where a number of children's activities will take place.

This year's scarecrow festival marks the tenth event, and organisers are hoping that it stays dry to attract as many people to visit as possible.

Organisers are encouraging youngsters to come dressed up as scarecrows.

They will also have the opportunity to take home a momento of the occasion, and have their picture taken with people dressed up as Worzel Gummidge and Aunt Sally at 3.30pm on both days.
