YOUNG people describe it as “awesome” and school inspectors agree that a Westhoughton primary is inspirational.

Ofsted graded Eatock Primary School as outstanding – the highest mark it can award – reporting that the school lives up to its school motto of “giving children wings to fly”.

Inspectors reported: “The exceptional leadership of the head teacher, ably assisted by the deputy and governing body, has set a culture of high expectations and insistence on nothing but the best for every pupil.”

Parents were said to have “nothing but praise” for the school, describing it as “amazing and wonderful”.

Ofsted added: “Pupils think the school is ‘awesome’ and feel very safe; parents agree.”

And Ofsted found that although children start school with a low skill set, they perform better than the rest when they leave.

Ofsted reported: “Children start school with skills and knowledge below those typical for their age but, by the time they leave the early years, they are making at least good progress and often better.

“They benefit from a vibrant and stimulating environment in which to learn.”

And by the time children leave Year 6, the children are achieving higher than their peers nationally.

Inspectors said: “The inspirational leadership of the head teacher and her unwavering determination to provide the very best for all pupils have resulted in Eatock being outstanding in all areas.

“The outstanding leadership of senior leaders and governors has ensured an ambitious focus and vision for the school.”

Head teacher Ann Flannery said she was delighted.

She said: “We are thrilled with the outcome of the recent Ofsted inspection. The achievement of an outstanding judgment is the result of the hard work and dedication of the staff, governors and children and the fabulous support we receive from our parents and carers.”
