A POPULAR community postman will return to work tomorrow after more than 3,000 people petitioned to have him reinstated.

Anthony Holt was relieved of his regular post around Stoneclough in June, but will once again be delivering the post in the area after winning an appeal against a dismissal.

He was told that he would be dismissed after he accidentally locked his keys in his Royal Mail van and then in a panic broke into the vehicle to retrieve them.

On hearing about his case, Stoneclough residents rallied around the much-loved postie, who has worked out of the nearby Radcliffe post depot for the past 18 years.

The 34-year-old is hugely popular in the area, not just for his upbeat demeanour and friendly chat, but for his willingness to go the extra mile for his customers.

When the Riverside Drive area was badly flooded in December, residents said that Mr Holt went out of his way to make sure their post was taken to safe locations and supported them throughout the difficult period.

He was also on hand to use his post van to help friend David De Souza put up giant metallic flowers around Kearsley as part of the Kearsley in Bloom celebrations.

Mr Holt said he is ‘very relieved’ to be returning to work and was keen to thank everyone who had supported him over the past six weeks.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to getting back to work now it's all over and done with.

“I can't thank people enough for their support and kind words.

“I really wasn’t expecting it because I just see the way I do things as just trying to be good at what I do.”

He added: “Saying thank you doesn’t really cover it but I can’t think of how else to say it.

“I better get used to setting my alarm for 4.30 am again now.”

Members of the Stoneclough, Prestolee and Ringley facebook page were delighted to hear the news of Mr Holt’s return.

Jochem Cheeseman said: “That's cheered me up hearing this news. Pleased your back in our community Anthony Holt.”

Kelly Ann added: “Excellent news and well deserved. I hope your employers saw the petition and realised what an asset you are.

Karen Speakman posted: “That is fantastic news, common sense has prevailed at last, see you soon.

Vivienne Dockerty added: “Wonderful news Anthony. Look forward to seeing you coming up the path.”

A Royal Mail spokesman confirmed that Mr Holt would return to work tomorrow.
