DISGUSTING and “scandalous” were just two of the thoughts of local residents after plans for 98 homes at Last Drop Village site were announced.

Residents in Hospital Road, Bromley Cross, which is directly opposite the site, were out on the road discussing the plans on Wednesday morning.

One woman who has lived there for 13 years said since they heard the news they had considered putting their house up for sale.

She said: “It has totally devalued our house. We are gutted and it was a shock when we found out.

“The main problem is traffic, it is bad enough on this road at the moment and it is just going to get worse.”

Traffic was one of the most recurring concerns by residents on the road

Jones Homes, part of the Emerson Group that acquired the Last Drop Village hotel and leisure complex earlier this year, has submitted proposals for 98 homes on two parcels of land either side of Haydock Lane.

Another resident who has lived on the road for 30 years said: “It is scandalous, we weren’t expecting it and we haven’t been warned about it.

“The concern is that this will just be the beginning, I think they will close down the Last Drop and turn that whole area in to houses, before we know it there could be 500 homes on there.”

Other issues raised by residents were lack of nearby school places and the impact on the local transport network.

Cllr David Greenhalgh has already said that he cannot support house building on this scale and a Hospital Road resident has encouraged people to object.

She said: “We need someone to co-ordinate the campaign. Petitions don’t work, we need everyone to write individual objections about why we don’t want this development to go ahead.

“We found out on Facebook, they haven’t even sent a letter out.

“People need to object on the grounds of road safety, the density of the houses and the fact that it is on an area of open protected green space.

“The character of the neighbourhood will be spoilt.”
