TWO of the biggest names in crime writing visited Bolton as they launched new novels to the delight of their fans.

Dynamic duo Martina Cole and Michael Connelly, whose books feature among the most borrowed from Bolton’s libraries as well as topping best seller lists, took part in signing sessions.

On Tuesday American writer Michael visited Bolton Central Library to talk about The Wrong Side of Goodbye — the 19th instalment in his Harry Bosch series.

He said: “This is the first time I’ve been here when a book has come out which is cool.

“This library is known for being able to reach out and get people to come to events. It may be the first time I’ve been here but I heard about it from the publisher who said we have got to go to Bolton Central Library.

“It always amazes me that I sit in a room in Los Angeles and write this book about this guy trying to figure out LA and there are people excited about it here. There’s something about the character that connects with people across the ocean all the way to Bolton. It shows the power and need for storytelling.

The 60-year-old former crime reporter has written 29 novels in all and tries to write one book a year but admits he does not have plans set for his next one.

He said: “I’m a bit of an introvert, when I write I’m in a room by myself 11 months of the year and an extrovert for one month doing publicity.

“I haven’t yet decided what to do. The inspiration hasn’t gone yet. There’s always something more, another layer of the onion to peel off. ”

Today sees Martina Cole’s latest offering, Betrayal, hit bookshops nationwide.

Speaking at Waterstones, where the book was released 24 hours in advance, the 57-year-old said: “I always enjoy my time in Bolton, great people, great place, and I always get the most fabulous reception here.

“Writing is a lonely occupation, you spend so long writing and then suddenly everyone wants to know what you’ve done. That I find nerve wracking!

“I have the best readers, though, every single one of them is lovely and loyal.

“I always say I’ve got the best job in the world!”
