THE elegance of New Year in Vienna told through music is coming to Bolton.

The world famous New Year’s Day concert will be replicated at Victoria Hall when Bolton Symphony Orchestra will perform at its most popular event of the year, under guest conductor Ben Crick.

The programme for the evening is crammed with pieces made famous by the Viennese Philharmonic and will cover Strauss and Lehar.

There will be the fast and the furious with the Thunder and Lightning Polka – one of the most famous polkas ever written, composed by Vienna’s “Waltz King” Johann Strauss. Be prepared for flash, bang wallop. The pace will be slower with the Blue Danube Waltz — possibly the most famous waltz ever written — also by Johann Strauss. It premiered on February 15, 1867, so the BSO performance will be within three weeks of its 150th Anniversary. A little Pizzicato Polka will be followed by Four Last Songs by Richard Strauss, and featuring soloist April Fredrick.

Franz Lehar’s Merry Widow will also feature with excerpts from the popular and well-known production.

There will also be some lessons in musical instruments with Webern’s Five Pieces for Orchestra which uses an unusual selection of instruments including the celesta which has a sound similar to a glockenspiel and which is French for ‘heavenly.’ There will also be a harmonium, also knowns as a “pump organ” which makes sound by blowing air through reeds which are tuned to different pitches to make musical notes.

The concert is on Saturday, January 28, at 7.30pm.Tickets: £10 Adults, free for under 19s, from Booths Music Shop, Churchgate, or Victoria Hal box office, 01204 522569.
