TWELVE food outlets in Bolton currently have a zero rating for food hygiene — meaning urgent improvement is necessary.

There are also 89 outlets that have been slapped with the second lowest rating, a level one for food hygiene — with the Food Standards Agency stating that ‘major improvement’ is required.

But there is some good news for Bolton food fans, with 865 of Bolton’s 2,249 food outlets achieving the top rating of five for food hygiene after inspectors visited their businesses – 59 more than in summer 2015.

The figures come from the ‘Scores on the Doors’ website, which was introduced nationally in 2011 and displays the results of inspections by council environmental health officials.

There are a number of outlets across the borough that are either exempt from inspection or are currently awaiting inspection — so the results could be set to change soon.

A council spokesman said: "The council’s food safety team carries out inspections on food premises across Bolton and aims to ensure that all food and drink purchased is safe for people to consume.

"Inspection frequency is based on the nature of each business and its compliance history.

"Every business that scores zero is issued with a written warning, identifying any contraventions of food law and given a timescale to rectify any issues.

"Some are issued with Hygiene Improvement Notices and some may be subject to closure until standards have improved.

"A premises with a zero rating will also be subject to follow up visits to check that standards have improved, usually within a short timescale.

"We are also lobbying government to make it a legal requirement for premises to display their rating, both on the premises and on their website. 

"The Council will continue in its duty to protect the health of local people, and  take robust action against food business that do not meet the required hygiene standards."

In Bolton, it is the BL1 and BL3 post codes that have the biggest number of zero-rated food businesses — with four falling within each areas.

The lists below is based on inspections that appear on the national Scores on the Doors website following council inspections.

Visits from the authority occur at different times and some businesses may be waiting on upcoming inspections.

Some may have changed management or closed in the interim.
