FAILING eateries and takeaways should be forced to display their food hygiene rankings in the window, insists a Bolton MP.

Bolton North East’s Sir David Crausby, who introduced an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons, is calling for a change in the law to force businesses to display their rankings on the shop front alongside the menu.

In Wales, similar businesses are forced by law to do just that. In the latest survey, twelve food outlets in Bolton have a zero rating — meaning urgent improvement is necessary.

There are also 89 outlets that have been slapped with the second lowest rating, a level one for food hygiene.

But there is some good news for Bolton food fans – 865 of Bolton’s 2,249 food outlets achieving the top rating of five, 59 more than in summer 2015.

Sir David said: “If people want to change the law they need to encourage their MPs to back my motion.” - (https://www.parliament.uk/edm/2016-17/925)

A spokesman for Bolton Council, which also wants a change in the law, said: “The council’s food safety team carries out inspections on food premises across Bolton and aims to ensure that all food and drink purchased is safe for people to consume. Inspection frequency is based on the nature of each business and its compliance history. Every business that scores zero is issued with a written warning, identifying any contraventions of food law and given a timescale to rectify any issues. Some are issued with hygiene improvement notices and some may be subject to closure until standards have improved.”

The list below is of zero rated businesses based on the most current council inspections:

Sheikh Yasar, of Chic Chic Chicken, said: “I had a number of family issues to deal with and I left someone in charge of the business at the time of the inspection. I have since made the necessary improvements and intend to have the inspectors re-visit as soon as possible.”

Mohammed Ahmed, of Red 2 Black Snooker Hall, said: “Most of the changes involved cleaning and the separation of food which were completed when the inspectors revisited a few days later.

“They reinforced their view that the business had to be spotless and we are working with them to get it right.”
