STUDENTS at Bury College were locked in their classrooms after a threatening Tweet was posted.

The "code red lockdown" was put into place this morning while Bury College investigated a "potential threat".

A spokesman for Bury police told The Bury Times a threat had been Tweeted and the force was investigating the "single strand" of information.

The Tweet is understood to have come via direct message on Twitter.

It is believed the hoaxer threatened to use a weapon.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said: "A Tweet was sent to Bury College.

"[They] said they had a weapon and they weren't afraid to use it."

A statement by the college at the time of the lockdown said: "Please note, the college is currently investigating a potential threat to our security.

"We are in communications with the police, following their advice and have instigated our alert procedures as a precaution.

"We will update further as we receive more information."

Charlie Deane, Bury College principal, said there was a threat made to the college and police were called.

He said "nothing has materialised" but they are taking no risks and evacuating the college building-by-building.

Following the lockdown, a Bury police spokesman said: "We have conducted all sorts of research and we remain of the view we have a single strand of information.

"We are dealing with it proportionately."

He added there would be an investigation into who sent the Tweet.

"There's no additional risk to the public and there's no additional information.

"But, there will be some additional patrols because we realise anxiety levels may be higher."

After the evacuation Mr Deane said: "I would like to thank the staff for their professionalism and the students and other visitors for their patience and understanding.

"I apologise for any inconvenience that may have occurred, however, the safety of our students and staff is paramount.

"I would also like to thank the police for their speedy response, sound advice and expert help in ensuring the safe evacuation [of] our students."
