FIVE people were arrested as a result of crowd trouble surrounding Bolton Wanderers’ match against Port Vale.

A 20-year-old man was arrested for criminal damage after reports of a flare being set off on a bus that caused an estimated £2000 of damage.

A number of fans from both sides invaded the pitch after David Wheater’s header gave the Whites’ the lead.

The match had to be suspended for around ten minutes and the referee took the players off the pitch while order was resumed.

During the match, four men were arrested, two from Bolton and two from Stoke-on-Trent, all for public order offences.

A 20-year-old man, address unknown, was issued a community resolution, evicted from the match and sent straight to the train station for pitch disorder.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “Although there was some unrest during the game, we are happy that our police presence managed to ensure events before and after went relatively smoothly.

“A continued police presence after the match prevented any incidents of note.”

Wanderers have also issued a statement condeming the incidents.

It read: "We do not condone the behaviour of a small  minority of individuals and we will be working closely with the relevant authorities to identify offenders.

"Pitch encroachment can potentially lead to the Club facing disciplinary action by the FA and we continue to remind all supporters that it is a criminal offence to go on to the pitch."
