BY George! The talented Smithills School musicians raised the roof of the Victoria Hall once again for the patron saint of England.

The musicians held their annual concert to celebrate St George's Day and raise money for worthy causes.

Hundreds attended on Saturday evening for the Smithills Concert for St George in aid of Help for Heroes and Bolton Hospice.

The audience was treated to old favourites including Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory and Rule Britannia.

The musicians took to the stage only two weeks after they performed their In Hollywood concert for Bolton Lions Club.

Chris Wormald, musical director, said: "Another, genuinely stunning night of music was enjoyed by everyone once again, our second such Victoria Hall charity concert in just two weeks.

"I must pay a sincere tribute to every player and singer who took to the stage with me once again on Saturday evening and performed to a truly extraordinary standard.

"With well over 200 highly regarded Victoria Hall concerts in my 34 years of conducting in Bolton, it is still such a thrill when literally every single piece on the programme could not have been performed better.

"The elation on the faces of every performer on stage is always a delight to witness and the standard of our Smithills musicians still continues to amaze our audiences even after three decades."

He added: "Thank you to everyone who made Saturday evening’s latest Smithills concert such a resounding success and given that we changed almost the whole programme from our Victoria Hall concert of only two weeks earlier, that is quite some achievement by our performers in entertaining almost 2,000 people across two concerts."
