THE icing on the cake for Molly Scot-Walker was when she got to see her design come to life at Bolton bakers Greenhalgh’s.

The 11-year-old won The Bolton News’ 150th anniversary Design a Cake competition with her clean-cut creation.

Entrants were required to create a design to incorporate the 150th theme in the format of a front page of the newspaper.

Molly, a pupil at Sacred Heart RC Primary School, was invited to Greenhalgh’s factory in Lostock, to see her winning design turned into a cake.

The youngster, who lives with mum Wendy Scot, dad Nigel Walker, brother Harrison, aged 15, and sister Phoebe, aged seven, said: “I love drawing and baking so when I heard about the competition I just entered it for a bit of fun.

“I drew a few designs at first and then chose the best out of the bunch before doing another couple of drawings until I came up with my final design.”

Molly’s cake was taken into school yesterday to be cut up and shared with her classmates.

She added: “I couldn’t believe it when I won. I never really win anything so all my friends at school were really excited for me.

“I think they were even more excited that they got a piece of the cake, which I helped make.”

Ms Scot said: “Her face just lit up when we told her she’d won. Phoebe entered the competition too so to have one of them win was fantastic.

“It’s been great for Molly and she’s not stopped talking about it since she found out.

“She’s been so excited to come down to Greenhalgh’s and actually see how they make their cakes and wear the overalls like the bakers.”

Molly was able to assist baker Cheryl Bates, who has been decorating cakes for 17 years, with icing the cake.

She added: “I knew I was going to come and have a look around and see where the cakes were made but being able to actually help decorate the cake with my own design, has been amazing.

“I’ve loved coming to the factory and had a really exciting day.”

Sandra Ogden, marketing manager at Greenhalgh’s, said: “We saw all of the designs and there were some really strong ones.

“There was a lot of choice so Molly can be proud knowing that everyone who voted thought her design was the best.

“I saw some quite busy designs but Molly’s is clean-cut, lovely and simple.

“It looks fantastic as a cake and really represents The Bolton News’ 150th anniversary.”

The competition was open to children and schools from across the borough with one age category, four to 11.

As well as the cake, Molly received a toy bundle from The Entertainer store and family tickets to Legoland and Seaworld.
