NEW fitness and wellbeing sessions in Radcliffe have started.

The classes, for over 55’s, are aimed at improving people’s general wellbeing whilst also providing community support.

The idea is the brainchild of retired couple Les and Barbara Hartwell, who run the ROC Centre in Radcliffe, where the sessions are held.

Les Hartwell, 69, of Trencherbone, Radcliffe said: “It’s all about working in the community and getting people to integrate with each other.

“The classes will be on a weekly basis and are open to all abilities who want to come and give it a go.

“So far the response has been very good and everyone said that they enjoyed themselves.”

The sessions, which run on Monday’s from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, are hosted by Anika Leslie-Walker, a lecturer in Sports Development at Bolton University.

Mr Hartwell added: “I know Anika so I approached her to ask if she knew anybody who could run the class but she liked the sound of it herself. She is very highly qualified and she made the first session lots of fun.”

Ms Walker, from Bolton, said: “Les was looking for volunteers to help him out so I put my name forward.

“There were a couple of people who came to the class who were worried that it might be too difficult for them as they have knee problems but they need not worry.”

The classes are mainly simple aerobic exercises with no equipment needed.

“I would say to people just to come and give it a try and see how they get on,” she added.

Classes cost just £1 on the door. For more information about the ROC Centre visit www.facebook.com/rocradcliffe
