THERE was gridlock in Bolton last night as road resurfacing work brought traffic to a standstill on a major route into town.

Motorists have reported long delays in Blackburn Road due to repairs on a section of Higher Bridge Street at the junction with Topp way and Prospect Street.

The work is expected to take around six weeks to complete.

Sections of Higher Bridge Street, from Topp Way to Waters Meeting Road, will close each evening from 7pm until 6am.

During the work, there is no access to Halliwell Road and Blackburn Road from St Peter’s Way and Higher Bridge Street on May 24 to 25, May 29 to 30, June 8 and 9, and June 12 and 13.

Motorists are advised that these dates are subject to change, dependent on weather.

Work is due to be completed on June 26.

Bolton Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Cllr Elaine Sherrington, said: “This is a major route which is heavily used and this is why we have programmed the work to only take place in the evenings and overnight.

“We understand that this work is still likely to cause some disruption and I would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience.”
